LOVE, ACTUALLY, OVER 5G: VODAFONE BRINGS THE CHRISTMAS MAGIC

With Christmas films everywhere you look,  we were delighted to be able to work on a real tear-jerker with Vodafone.

The brand’s earned-first Christmas campaign brings to life the speed and reliability of its 5G network.

‘Nothing Christmassy about that,’ we hear you say!

But by combining Vodafone’s 5G network with an incredible piece of tech and Martine McCutcheon’s vocal sounds, an inspirational cancer survivor with voice loss was able to perform a very special Christmas carol for her sister, Mia.

Tanja Bage (pronounced Bor-guh) had her voice box removed (laryngectomy) following a throat cancer diagnosis in 2020, and now speaks through a speech valve.

Tanja wore an instrument around her neck called an Electrospit which was connected to Vodafone’s 5G network.  Martine’s vocal sounds (the oooohs and aahhhhhs) were transmitted over the 5G network into the Electrospit which Tanja was wearing around her neck. Tanja was able to shape the sounds into words and give the first-of-its-kind doorstep rendition of the sisters’ favourite Christmas carol, Silent Night.

We worked with our sister content agency, Oh My!, to capture the incredible moment on film, which has now been rolled out across earned, social and paid media.  Sound Voice, who identified the use of the Electrospit, provided the musical and vocal direction, and The 5Gs helped ensure the tech behaved.

Have a watch of the footage above, and have the tissues at the ready as it’s pretty emosh…
